The
greatest gift a father can give to a child is his time. Since 1926 YMCA
programs have been helping fathers get to know their children better
while they are still in their formative years.
The Trailblazers program aims to enrich the relationship and
companionship between fathers and their children as they explore their
environment, community, and lives together. The trailblazers program is
specifically designed to promote bonding between a child and their
father, with both father and child expected to participate fully in the
activities.
Participants should expect to develop common core values, improve
personal relationships, develop tolerance of others, appreciate
diversity, become better leaders and team members, learn to mentor
others, develop specific life skills, and have some fun.
Trailblazers is affiliated with the Logewhego Federation of the B.R.
Ryall YMCA, and is intended as a place where graduates of the
Y-Princess and Y-Guides programs can continue to build a positive,
lifelong relationship between father and child.
The target age for the program is 5th through 10th grade. This is only intended as a guideline, and we encourage fathers to participate in activities that they believe are age appropriate for their child.
Trailblazers is a much smaller organization than the Y-Princess or Y-Guides program. This allows us more flexibility on meetings and events. Trailblazers is co-educational (fathers, sons, and daughters), and organized as a single group. Monthly meetings will be held at the YMCA throughout the program year, focusing on event registration and coordination.
Trailblazers is a volunteer led organization. The governing
body of
the Trailblazers is known as the Trail Council. The offices
are
Trail Master, Trail Guide, Scout, and Ranger. The Trailblazers program
is designed to foster leadership among the youth as well as the adults.
The governing body also includes a Youth Advisory Council drawn from
the sons and daughters participating in the program. The Youth Advisory
Council will make recommendations and decisions regarding all aspects
of the program. They will also share responsibilities with the Trail
Council for event coordination. Youth Advisory Council members are
appointed by the Trail Council and serve 5-month terms.
Because Trailblazers are older children and teens, the program
will
have a variety of thematic activities, instead of a single Native
American theme. Unlike the Y- Guides and Y-Princess programs, there
will be no vests or patches.
